About Derrick Bowling MD
A native of Russellville, Alabama, Dr. Bowling attended the University of Alabama from 1988-1994. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in German and History in 1992, and summa cum laude with a Master of Arts in German Literature in 1994...
Dr. Bowling taught German pronunciation as an Undergraduate Lecturer, and was an Instructor of German as a graduate student. He also taught distance education courses and community night courses for German with the arrival of the Mercedes plant. He taught high school freshman English and German in Ocala, Florida before leaving to pursue a career in medicine.
From 1995 until 1998 he attended UAB to prepare for medical school. He began his medical education at UAB School of Medicine in 1998 and graduated in the Top 12% of his class in 2002. He completed his clinical years and residency at UAB Huntsville Family Medicine Residency. He was Chief Resident in his final year of training.
An avid student of other cultures and languages, he enjoys traveling with his spouse. He speaks fluid German, and is currently studying French, Spanish, and Italian. He enjoys gardening, reading, attending plays and musicals, and playing cards with friends. He has been a runner since 2011 and has completed 26 half-marathons.
He is a member of the American Association of Family Physicians, the Alabama Chapter of the AAFP, Walker County Medical Society, and American Academy of Facial Esthetics.
